Devlog 1 - Volumetric Cloud & Nebula System

This is the first devlog for my project, Little Backyard! This will be a space where I can inform the general community what I have been up to and what is currently being developed for this game.

Now then, I have added several volumetric systems, both of which are viewable in this screenshot.

Each planet will sport dynamic cloud systems that use the same algorithm as AAA studios. By marching through a 3-dimensional noise texture and applying different scattering techniques, you are given lifelike clouds that can be changed on the fly. These clouds' shading is simplified to fit the art style. Additionally, the same algorithm is used for the nebula formations as seen in the background.

What is not seen is the enormous possibilities for player exploration. Through several techniques, the player can travel not only between planets, but between solar systems with zero load times. This project, much like the games it's based on, values minimal load times as a key factor for player engagement.

Both of these systems can be tuned for different results when exploring the galaxy. As it stands, the galaxy is homogeneous, but will have an overall spiral structure as it is worked on further. Additionally, I want each nebula colors to change as you travel through space. It can be expected that these systems will be developed in the coming weeks.

Lastly, here is a list of features that I am planning to finish before September 26. This date is when I start school, and as a result my attention will be divided. However, Little Backyard will continue to be developed.

- Galactic Structure (varied densities, spiral structure)

- Revamped Forest & Rock generation

- Reintroduce planet types so that each has its own collection of structures, trees, and rocks.

- New ship model with procedural parts.

- Calming, windchyme music

I'm incredibly close to finishing the groundwork of this project. I'm excited to say this project, ironically titled "Little Backyard", will be published on itch.io and free to download. A specific release date has not been decided and will be determined as the project nears its end.
